What is NAMI?
What is the NAMI mission? NAMI is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to the improvement of the quality of life for persons of all ages who are affected by mental illnesses.
What does NAMI do?NAMI members and friends work to fulfill our mission by providing support, education, and advocacy.
Our many activities include:
Public Education and Information ActivitiesNAMI's Web Site (http://www.nami.org/) receives over 5.4 million visitors a year who turn to NAMI for information, referral, and education; NAMI's Helpline (1-800-950-6264) is staffed by a dedicated team and serves over 4,000 callers per month. Peer Education and SupportNAMI Educational Programs provide critical education to help consumers and family members gain knowledge and skills for living successfully with mental illness.
Support Groups are provided through many of NAMI's state and local affiliates and offer invaluable connections with peers who understand the challenges and joys of living with mental illness.
Raising Awareness and Fighting Stigma. NAMIWalks is a signature NAMI event that draws thousands of concerned citizens every year who walk together in over sixty communities across the nation to raise money and awareness about mental illness. StigmaBusters responds to inaccurate and hurtful language and portrayals of mental illness in the media and promotes understanding and respect for those who live with mental illness. In Our Own Voice presents deeply personal and moving journeys of recovery by consumers living with mental illness.
State and Federal Advocacy: NAMI Advocacy provides a key voice for state and federal public and private-sector policies that facilitate research, end discrimination, reduce barriers to successful life in the community and promote timely, comprehensive and effective mental health services and supports.
What are the benefits of NAMI membership? All NAMI members receive the benefits of membership at all three levels of the organization, including:
Membership in the local affiliate, state organization, and NAMI national organizations Eligibility to vote in all NAMI elections. NAMI Grainger County
Welcome to our blog. We are a new National Alliance on Mental Illness Affiliate in the State of Tennessee. We began in January 2009. We held our first meeting in the Bean Station Town Hall on January 4, 2009, with six members and one guest present.
Our officers are President Theresa Carey, Vice-President Steven Winstead, Secretary Carolyn Jarnagin, and Treasurer Diane Roberts.
Day on the Hill:
Each attendee is asked to contact their own representative after Feb. 2nd (when they return to their Nashville offices) and if possible make an appt. for the afternoon of March 3rd. There will be speeches and activities in the morning, but if this is the only time you can meet with your representative that meeting is the more important of the events.
We will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express on Broadway the night of March 2nd. The hotel provides breakfast and a sack lunch will also be provided. Participants will be responsible for their own meals while traveling to and from Nashville.
NAMI Tn will provide mileage for 2 cars and 2 hotel rooms for each affiliate. How many people you put in those cars and rooms will be up to you. Because of the distance they must travel Mountain City will be allocated an extra night's hotel stay. On-line registration will be at http://www.namitn.org/
AMERICHOICE:
Americhoice is only allowed to contact Tenncare patients to get them their new insurance cards or let them know if they will be remaining with TennCare and if they will be covered by Americhoice or Bluecare, IF TennCare has your current correct mailing address. Make sure your contact information with TennCare is up to date!!
1. Americhoice will be taking over the administration of TennCare in East Tn. beginning January 1st. If you have problems with the change, Americhoice's phone number is 800-690-1606.
2. The office of Consumer Affairs (Willis Ferris) 615 532-6700 has the information on who is remaining Tenn Care Select.
3. TPAL has funding to continue to operate until June of 2009 and hopefully will be able to continue to help you with your TennCare problems during this time. Contact them through 800 758-1638 or http://www.tpal.org/
Second Most Important - There are openings on the Behavioral Health Advisory Committee for mental health consumers and family members. Americhoice pays for mileage and a stipend for attending the 4 quarterly board meetings a year in Knoxville. The committment to the board is for 3 years, although of course things happen in our lives to prevent us from completing our committments and AmeriChoice will release you from the committment. Ideal candidates would be consumers or family members who deal directly with TennCare and who understand the needs and shortcomings.

When someone pays the full rate, then $7.50 goes to national, $7.50 goes to national and the remaining $10. stays with the affiliate. The affiliate can use that 1 membership to pay for 5 hardship members, ie $5. to national and $5. to the state. Of course the affiliate doesn't have any money at that point but they do have 6 members.

Also once the affiliate papers are completed and the membership and dues paid to national and state, the whole thing approved by Tod Jablonski and submitted then the affiliate will receive start up funds. They will also receive another allocation of funds July 1st based on the number of members in the database on that date.
